What is a bit as specified in HUP and PUP calculations?

The rate prediction is designed for single event upsets of a single
memory bit or applied more generally, a single sensitive volume. The
method of prediction is calculated for the single volume and thus
produces an error rate per bit. If the user fills in the number of bits
per device field, the tool simply multiplies the per bit rate in order
to calculate a per device error rate.
